Louise's Utopia: Super Blue Moon Sensation Seen From Sisseton, South Dakota!

Updated: Nov 17, 2024

On the evening of August 19, 2024, the world had a super moon and a blue moon, simultaneously! Blue moons are fairly common. They occur when there are two full moons in one month's time. A blue moon usually takes place every two to three years. I did not want to wait that long to see the next blue moon, as it will not happen again until 2027! So, I stayed up late that night trying to get a great shot with my camera. It is not that easy to get a good shot with a genuine camera. I have not used manual mode on a camera in a quite a while. I know the picture above is a bit blurry. It is about the best moon picture I was able to capture. I was only semi-satisfied with the photo. Happily though, I am now determined to keep the camera out of my closet and practice using it again on a daily basis. The Apple phone has made it very easy to just point and click. And the pictures the iPhone takes are fairly decent. It is easy to give up the real cameras for the simple solution. But the canon takes way better pictures. I also appreciate that my photos are private on the canon. Apple Cloud does not have a copy of everything I photograph- unless I upload the pictures to my computer.

The blue moon was fun. The fact that it was also a super moon merely added to the pleasure. Super moons are when the moon is at the closest point that it comes to the Earth in its elliptical orbit.

I feel as though in the past, I have seen the moon look much larger and brighter in the sky. Perhaps, those were super moons. All in all, I am glad I pulled out my camera. I feel motivated to lug it around again. In spite of the fact, that it is a lot of work to carry a heavy camera and tripod about. Just comparing it to the easy, lightweight phone is somewhat humorous.

Let me know if you stayed up to see the moon.

I will add that the night was amazing. There were very agreeable temperatures and a light breeze. When I viewed the moon, there was no obstruction of clouds and the stars were out. It was a lovely night.

On a side note. I did recently read that the moon is slowly drifting away from Earth. Don't worry-we won't see it disappear. It supposedly drifts at a rate of 3.82 centimeters a year. Perhaps someone, someday will see that drift completely finish the job. Possibly. But personally, I kind of doubt it. But maybe...
