They say the fall is a good time to trim the trees and it was at Coteau Valley Farm in Northeast South Dakota. The Spruce trees were in desperate need of a good trimming. In early October we began sawing the lower branches off the trees. It was nice to get moving on work that shows instant reward, all the while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Even the wind feels good blowing in your face as you work on the farm. The cats tried to help out but they mostly just played in the trees.
I think this trim will help these trees have more energy to expend this spring, they will grow taller and grow lots of extra branches and needles. These spruce which have a fresh, fragrant evergreen smell were very refreshing to be close to and it was a rewarding job. Living on a hobby farm in the Coteau Valley of South Dakota is rewarding!
