Here on the Coteau Valley Farm in Northeast South Dakota there are many chores. We find ourselves making a lot of small trips to the store on gravel country roads. One particular time we were driving home from the store and came across a peculiar sight. Just off the road on the Northwest corner of a BIA 700 and Roberts County Road 5, seemingly dropped in the tall grass was a sculpture of a gigantic steel buffalo. A small sign head is nicely installed at the site which gives some insight about the sculpture. I walked toward the wondrous sight, with the wind blowing all around me. Sacrifice, as it is called, is made of solid steel and is a huge life sized masterpiece. He stood as if beckoning the past herds of buffalo that graced the plains not so long ago. Covered with various equipment welded lovingly to the sides of the animal, it seemingly mimicked the way the buffalo had provided varied tools for so many long ago. There are wheels and tractor seats, and chains, horse equipment, army shield, pitchforks, endless tools. I was really happy to see this attraction. Maybe if you too find yourself lost in Northeast South Dakota next to a giant steel buffalo pull into the grassy lot, it’s worth the stop. Get a good look at the past through the vantage of a steel buffalo. The awesome sight of the thick, brown haired, curled horn buffalo, alone in a field, its a fitting tribute to the past.
